    Phenom - Bad News

Intels side of the story: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/...xtreme_qx9770/

AMDs side of the story: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/...eaves_its_web/

Lots of reading on both sides - may the best win the mighty cup!

I found this news disturbing but, now we understand what there problem has been:

"Somehow, we couldn't help but think back to the P60 as Dave Everitt informed the audience that a processor bug had found its way into the early Phenom processor samples. The bug causes the system to freeze when a certain combination of instructions coincides with extraordinarily high traffic. This bug can only be reproduced in the lab but does not occur under normal, real-world conditions. It is still present in the 2.20 GHz and 2.30 GHz versions of the Phenom (9500 and 9600).
As a result of this bug, the 2.4 GHz version of the Phenom with the model number 9700 has been pushed back to January of 2008. When it comes out, that version will not contain the bug."

I found this news on the 8th page of the AMD article above.

On Page #19, I found the new AMD's Overdrive tool, used exclusively for overclocking - Way Cool

    Last Page Quote:
AMD seems to have done its homework when the company set the price for its Phenom processors. The Phenom 9600 is about 13.5% slower than Intel's Q6600 in our benchmarks. On the other hand, its price is also 13.6% lower than that of its direct competitor. Thus, the two products offer practically the same performance for your money.

    EDIT:

    Seen Neogen's post.

BTW that mentions the program Overdrive. I saw a reference to it last week but google gave me nothing on it.

I'm currently in the basis of planning to buy for my new computer. Currently I'm leaning towards an Intel dual-core and wait for the more affordable Penryns to come out in Jan.

I was planning on Phenom, but I don't know what to get.

Hot news on Hardware. I'm running four Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit computers right now with the AMD dual core chip. The Graphics Card is the EVGA N7600. If you have one of these cards in your machine you might want to check it. There are five 6.3 Volt Capacitors next to the fan. They have consistently popped their tops on my computers. 100% Failure rate. There is a "K" scribed in the top of each and they rupture aling these scribed lines. As of yet, EVGA has failed to make good on the cards. They want to replace them with the same card again. This makes no sense at all.
The fans tend to be rather loud, like a woman being murdered outside your door. It test, open your computer and just touch the N7600 card, the noise will stop.

I am still gonna stick with AMD. It seems they have a better upgrade path for the am2+ platform. I look forward to an upgrade without buying new motherboards everytime. I'm getting to old to be a fan of the 3d shooters and have little need for the very top of the line systems anymore. I think they have some very nice prices on their dual cores. I just ordered a 5000+ to try a home theater pc and see if the chip is a good overclocker.
