BREAKING NEWS: Squirrel manages to close LCCC campus

    November 19, 2007 - 11:16AM

GODFREY -- Lewis and Clark Community College this morning announced plans to close the campus at 2 p.m. today after a squirrel triggered a power outage.

Half the campus is believed out of power, spokeswoman Lori Artis said. The squirrel apparently caused a transformer to blow out.

The outage is believed to affect only the campus and not the surrounding area.

    Just too funny

Those squirrels were taught how to knock out power in Pennsylvania, in my area we have regular outages in the fall due to the varmints thinking the fuses are acorns. It is very common to find fried squirrel carcasses near the blown transformers. We regularly ship them around the globe hopefully ending the worlds requirements for electricity one transformer at a time.

Some people call them Tree Rats...

The funny part was this wasn't a fuse that they tripped, this was a wire that they chewed through that required most of the day to fix.

Squirrel manages to close LCCC campus

GODFREY — A main service line proved too tempting Monday for a gnawing squirrel, whose chewing knocked out voice mail, electricity and computer services, and forced LCCC’s main campus to close.

However, Lewis and Clark Community College did not cancel classes at its satellite campuses.
The unfortunate squirrel, which got the jolt of its life, died from its poor choice of chewing material.

The rodent had nibbled on a part of the line that was inside a piece of conduit on a pole between the Trimpe Building and some evergreens about 7:30 a.m. Monday, said Kent Scheffel, LCCC assistant vice president for community services.

Scheffel said officials canceled classes at 2 p.m. to allow Wegman Electric Co. of Bethalto and Ameren workers to shut down electricity throughout the college, then make the repairs once they got the necessary parts.

Power was restored about 6:15 p.m., so classes will be held today as scheduled, he said.
