    and that - as they say - is a wrap

    I set some achievable goals and just over 1 week later - nailed them
    Revised my ability in distributed LLR client managemement.
    Approx 10 thousand pairs tested (I have to wait for the next few stats updates - I will settle up any difference later)
    Passed 1% of total LLR pairs done on table 3a
    Got the team onto table 3b
    Got the team past last place on table 3b
    Took a place in 2 project pushes.
    I grabbed a prime (unconfirmed - but there is always next time to be sure)
    That got me onto the NPLB current primes table.
    Hopefully that will get me on table 1. Time will tell.

    After 12 months of non-stop-BOINC I can fairly say that I am still a prime seeker.
    3 years on Riesel and 1 year on PSP never netted me a single prime.
    So all-in-all I am now a happy-prime-seeker. (fingers crossed on the confirm)

    Karsten and Gary have a thriving project with increasing support over there at mersenne.
    Thanks to Carlos and IronBits for providing their Server ports and saving me the hassle of setting up my own.
    (I know there were others available but they were not in the "push" so they miss out on the complement)
    Given the increased interest and support, it is very likely that I will be back.

    Q: Will another AMD Users member beat me to it ?

    And now (with respect to the Monty Python cast) for something completely different...

    We would like to run a 24-hour LLRnet server rally on port 300 from May 3rd at 7 PM GMT to May 4th at 7 PM GMT.

    This would be noon Sat.-noon Sun. PDT, 2 PM-2PM CDT, or 3 PM-3 PM EDT in the U.S.

    Here is the server info.:
    server = "nplb.rieselprime.org"
    port = 300

    General info. on setting up a connection to an LLRnet server can be found here. The above info. should be put in the llr-clientconfig.txt file.

    Everyone bring all of your firepower to the rally as we see how fast we can bring drive 1 up to n=425K!

    Stats: http://nplb.rieselprime.org/

    Hi all,

    I would like to announce the first No Prime Left Behind (NPLB) LLRnet rally in over a year on our port 3000 this weekend from Fri. April 30th at 7 PM GMT to Sun. May 2nd at 7 PM GMT.

    As many of you may already know, NPLB is searching for primes of the form k*2^n-1. The range that we will be working on is for k=400 to 600 and at rally time, the searches will be in the n=765K to 775K range. This will make any primes found in the top 1000 largest of all time!

    We have a new version of the LLRnet client, which runs the newest LLR 3.8. It is 10-15% faster than previous versions of LLRnet.

    Please see details about the rally and how to download the fast LLRnet client in our mersennene forum posting announcement at http://www.mersenneforum.org/showpos...93&postcount=1. There are Windows and Linux versions of the client available. Questions can be asked here or there but some have already been asked and answered there.

    As a general "how to" for people new to LLRnet, you would download the client found in the links in our forum and create as many copies of it as there are cores on your machine(s). After doing so, you'll need to change the llr-clientconfig.txt file to something similar to the following:

    server = "www.noprimeleftbehind.net"
    port = 3000
    username = "(your ID)"
    serviceName = "LLRnet-test1"
    WUCacheSize = 1

    Vaughan Davies will be participating in the rally and we hope to see other AMD users there also. If you decide to come, be sure and ask us to get you set up on an appropriate team ahead of time. Team Raiders of the Lost Primes (ROLP), consisting of the NPLB admins and a couple of other regulars at Mersenneforum is looking to woop on Free-DC and AMD users. We got BBQ'd by Free-DC the last go around. :-)

    Gary,

    The line:

    serviceName = "LLRnet-test1"

    is a new one isn't it? What does it do in the llr-clientconfig.txt file?

    I had to pose this question in the NPLB forum. Here is a quote from our co-admin Max:

    That's so that LLRnet knows what to name itself in Windows' service registry if you set it up to be autostarted as a service upon system boot. If you use that functionality, I think they have to be unique (no two clients on the same machine with the same serviceName). However, that functionality most definitely does not work with the "new" clients (do.bat/pl). I'm not sure if LLRnet still needs it to be specified in order to run, though.

    And that's what matters.

    I'll stick with RS for the minute though. RS has a definite end. When all 100 numbers are found, the project will be complete Which is nice to know as you'll finish something and can then focus on something else.
    It's good that people take different tracks on all this. When you get to the bottom of it all, everything relates to mathematics in one way or another. Just a huge huge field. And advances and understanding in one area helps the overall understanding of what makes all this stuff in this world tick. And while not readily apparent to many, it all does contribute to our understanding and further advancement. When you look way back in history, what were they working on? Mathematics.... and here we are still working away. And if the human race manages to stay alive, way on down the road they will still be working on understanding mathematics.

    We did have a good weekend at NPLB though on the Free-DC BBQ rally. Was a real good turn out and a LOT of work was completed for the NPLB project. Take a gander over there... Our own AMDave has put in a lot of work with BOK and IronBits on getting a good set of stats for the project. Quite impressive indeed! While AMD_Users placed last in the teams competing, we were there and we contributed. No it's not boinc however it was a fun gathering of some of the hard core DC world folks.

    Are we still focussed on the port 8000 or should I change my llr-clientconfig.txt to port=9000 or something else?

    Currently reads:

    server = "nplb.ironbits.net"
    port = 8000

    I moved to port 9000 mainly because I only have a couple of older machines running the client. Port 8000 is fine if you are running a newer machine and/or interested in finding primes that will be qualified for the Top 5000 Prime Pages..plus they score higher in the stats race.

    OK jamers thanks for the info.

    Edit: AMDave notified me that I found my first prime in the No Prime Left Behind project last night. Gary Barnes also e-mailed me today saying it qualifies for an entry in the Top 5000 Primes List.

    woot!

    The lucky computer is my old Shuttle XPC box - a P4 3.2 Prescott.
