Need Help made a big mistake

    I bought a GA-MA770-DS3 for 9850black, now I do my checking and find out the GA-MA770-DS3 doesn't support 9850.

I hear there are heat problems with 125w but not sure thats why it doesn't support it. I can always get some heat spreaders.

I need some help on how to get this to work, the build will be here by friday and I've been so looking forward to upgrading my system to a quad core.

    I currently have
    4800 x2
    7600gt
    2 g ram

    New build will be
    9850 phenom black
    9800gtx
    4 g ram 1066

i went to gugabytes web site to have a look at cpu support list below is some of table

Vender Model Frequency L2 Cache L3 Cache Core Name Process Stepping Wattage System Bus(MHz)
    AMD Phenom X4 9850 2500Mhz 512KBx4 2MB Agena 65nm B3 125W 4000 N/A
    AMD Phenom X4 9750 2400Mhz 512KBx4 2MB Agena 65nm B3 125W 3600 F4

as you can see from table 125w 9750 is supported and the only thing i can see that is different is System Bus(MHz) (i assume this refers to nb speed) so it might be as simple waiting or contacting gigabyte and getting a beta bios

Maybe I should try underclocking was going to use the board for another system I'm building my wife. When the money comes In I'll get one of those nice FX boards I been hearing about. But I'm not good with the math, what should the multiplier and such be.

I was also thinking if it doesn't post to bios even in fail safe mode, I could maybe use my am2 64 4800 X2 chip

I am not sure if it will support my new ram.

    1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

If not then I guess I'll just use my old ram.

it should, just at ddr2-800 speed. 1066 needs the controller in the phenom.

Note: Due to AMD AM2+ CPU limitation, DDR2 1066 is only supported by 1 dimm per channel.

i think it will come down to how ram spec have been stored ie jdec or epp and if you are using 1 or 2 gb sticks, (i noticed you saying about 4 gb ram in first post)

It's 1g sticks, umm G-Skill isn't on their list but the Voltage and everything looks about same compared to others on the list. Shot so I should have gotten the 2g sticks for this board. I guess the final touch's to this build going to have to wait, for new board.

Still haven't heard the Multiplier for underclocking to make it match 9750 but i'll look that up. I'm sure there is something I can google on it.

The default FSB for the 9850 is 200 Mhz, so a multiplyer of 12X would get you the same as the 9750 (2400 Mhz) , don't worry about the ram, just throw two sticks in, I'm only running 2 Gb of ram in my 9850, it's working fine. I didn't see mention of an OS, Win XP can only recognize up to 3.2 Gb anyway unless you're running the 64 Bit version. I'm thinking just because the 9850 isn't listed for your board, it still might work. Mine worked fine (MSI K9A2 Platinum) even before the bios upgrade which the manufacturer required. Gigabyte may still be in the testing stage.........Good Luck

I got it to work as a 9850 2.5 ghz. I basically added heat speaders to all the voltage handlers next to the cpu, and believe me they run hot.

But it's running great, I kept the 4g ram just droped them to 800mhz, I tryed 1066, wouldn't post with 4 sticks in. I figure I'll run some benchmarks and see whats better for xp 32. My guess 3.2g ram vs 2g ram at 1066.

I'm just happy it's running temps are ok 46c cpu and system is 34c. it's not the coolest thing but it's not bad, considering I didn't even think the board would run it. I'll post the benchmark 3d mark 03 , 05, 06 scores here shortly. Need to run test first.

    OK fast run down
    37501 for 3d mark 2003
    16521 for 3d mark 2005 cpu was 9522
    12247 for 3d mark 2006 cpu was 3781

all in all compared to other systems I did well i think. For xp system and underclocked ram. Check temps and they stayed the same for the most part. So I guess I'll call this a successful build. Thanks everyone for your help.
