Project Update

It's been a while since any news has been posted about PrimeGrid so I thought I'd provide an update.

The prime projects at PrimeGrid continue to grow. Currently the following are offered:

LLR Projects (primality testing)

• 321 Prime Search (BOINC)
• Cullen Prime Search (BOINC)
• Generalized Cullen/Woodall Prime Search (PG LLRNet)
• Prime Sierpinski Project (BOINC, LLRNet*, Manual*)
• Proth Prime Search (BOINC)
• Sophie Germain Prime Search (PG LLRNet)
• Twin Prime Search (BOINC)

Sieve Projects (finding factors)

• 321 Sieve (Manual)
• Cullen/Woodall Sieve (BOINC, Manual)
• Generalized Cullen/Woodall Sieve (Manual)
• Prime Sierpinski Project Sieve (BOINC, Manual*)
• Proth Sieve (BOINC, Manual)
• Twin Prime Sieve (Manual**)

As you can see, there's a wide variety of work to do from BOINC to LLRNet to Manual. There are applications for 32 bit and 64 bit Linux and Windows...with MacIntel hopefully by the end of the year. WU's range from less than a minute to more than 48 hours.

Please visit PrimeGrid to see if there's any project that suits your interests. Also, with so many prime searches underway, there's always a need for more sievers. The top three priorities are currently:

1. PPS Sieve (p=68T) - goal, to reach a sieve depth of 500T initially and 850T long term
2. 321 Sieve (p=55T) - goal, to reach a sieve depth of 850T initially and ??? long term
3. PSP Sieve (p=9.4P) - goal, to reach p=10P before 13 October 2008 (1 year anniversary)

Every few months I check the preferences page on my account at primegrid to see if I'm missing on new projects. There's usually one or two new ones everytime I go take a look. This project is developing and expanding quite well.

Only interested in Top 5000 primes, check out the Proth Prime Search Extended in PRPNet. Recent stats on port 9000 show the following rates (Q6600 running 24/7):

• 1-2 Top 5000 primes per core every 10 days
• 1-2 Top 5000 primes per dual core every 5 days
• 1-2 Top 5000 primes per quad core every 2-3 days
• 1-2 Top 5000 primes per dual quad core every 1-2 days
• 1-2 Top 5000 primes per 10 cores every 1 day

Brucifer reminded me today that Primegrid has been working on another CUDA project. This time its pps sieve. Using Windows an nVidia 9800GTX takes approx 21 minutes a task and scores about 6 cobblestones.

Make sure you select use GPU and uncheck use CPU in your PG preferences. Otherwise you'll get some CPU work that take about 7 hours a task.
