Thanks for the invitation to join the forum, vaughan.
First off let me say that I am not new to dc'ing, but have been inactive for some time (14-18 months). I started out in 1998 - 1999 running GIMPS, RC5-56/64 and OGR-24, needless to say after 8 years or so I got burnt-out.
I just recently decided to jump back in and am in the process of upgrading, replacing all the old single and dual core machines to something a bit more competitive.
ATM I have 27 machines (86 cores) running at home for now, a mix of AMD and Intel.
At work 5 machines (7 cores) all Intel P4's.
"The Plan" is to reach 1 Million cobblestones/points? on PrimeGrid then move to another project for 1 Million points, then another and another...etc.
you got burnt out, or the hardware did? :D
at THAT many machines, wouldn't replacing them with 4-8 i7s be more energy efficient?
a friend and i calculated that the energy saved between an Atom and a 939 Athlon 64 was $20 in a year. not enough to pay for itself... at least in 4+ years... however, with 27 machines, i wonder what the difference would be...?
edit: oh, reexamining your number of units crunched in a day, it might take 16 (give or take 4) i7s to do the same number of units (if seti is a benchmark for the number of units an i7 would make in a day). THAT wouldn't pay for itself very quickly ;)

As to being burnt out, it was me, the hardware still runs but is not competitive anymore.
Energy savings is but one of the concerns when upgrading/replacing hardware. The 2 top concerns for me are "getting the most bang for the buck" in the projects I'm interested in running and my budget. And 27 machines is just what I have running ATM, there more that I have yet to replace or upgrade so an I7 may get thrown into the mix.
Congratulations jamers on reaching your first Million in Primegrid.
That was mighty fast.
welcome to the team jamers
impressive pharm, i had noticed your rac on primegrid and was wondering how many comps you have
Welcome Jamers,
That's quite a impressive bunch of crunchers you have there. Glad you could join us.
Wow dude how could you afford that much cpu power let alone the cost of electric for it? Lol
