Upgrading Java doesn't work with Dimes. I was updating for ages and Dimes just wouldn't behave.
Totally un-install Java and Dimes. Reboot. Check at Java site to ensure you are not running Java.
Download and install latest Java and Dimes, prey that it works.

The Dimes client java 'wrapper' has a hard-coded section that looks for Java major-versions.
Because it is hard coded it needs to be updated when major versions are released.
It is possible to manually change that piece of code (command file for Win, bash script for linux). /edit - memory fading obviously. I checked again. This is not true for the win version -edit/
I posted on the Dimes forum about that a couple of years ago, then they patched the code and it worked for everyone at the time.
It is probably well past time to be patched again.

Just as an aside:
I recommend not using old versions of the java SDK to get an old app to work.
That re-introduces old security problems that have been fixed in newer versions.
It works, but you need to be aware of the 'holes' that you put back into your security layer.
I don't know if that's what you fella's are doing, but I'd hazard a guess ;)

I agree with AMDave's comment re the security holes. I was trying to get Dimes to run using the version 12 patch of Java as the Dimes forum recommended. I had very limited success using this technique with maybe one in five computers actually managing to get any Dimes points that way. It was when I noticed Beerknurd approaching in my rear view mirror with only a million points buffer that I started to invest some time looking for a solution. I think the Dimes project managers are very lazy and don't care about trying to run a robust application. I decided to go the clean install route on one box and with a brand new installation of Win 7 with the very latest Java and Dimes I managed to get it to work. This made me do clean outs and reinstalls of Java and Dimes and the results speak for themselves.

The plus is that the Java security holes have been fixed and Secunia has now stopped whinging that my Java is insecure.

I wasn't able to replicate your issues after all.
My installs went through clean and straight, no bumps or corners
And now a have a running dimes client again.
ha ha ha.

NB - that was on a machine that had no java on it to start with.
Perhaps vaughan has something there.
remove all traces of Java before installing the new version and your Dimes client.
