    64bit OS

    Hi guys,
I would like to get the best out of my athlon64, but after reading i can't count how many articles, I have realized that i need some input from the team. Is anyone running the 64bit OS for windows? Or at least some ideas for me. Another possibility is I have been toying with the idea of learning linux. Do they make a reliable 64bit? Any help or comment is welcome

    Thanks
    Bill

I cant really help but was looking at 64 OS seeing as i want a 64processor (an fx really but not enough money for them ).

i found the windows 64 OS:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/6...n/upgrade.mspx

it is only in "testing though" meaning there are still unsolved problems.

I downloaded the MS 64 beta. It installs on my 3000+ 64 without any issues.

I tried installing 2 different firewalls but without success. Couldn't load Norton AV either.

Without those 2 I'm not going on the net.

So its back to 32 bit.

That answered my questions. Looks like 32bit till they get 64 developed a little better.

you can have 2 OS installed on the same machine with it asking you which to load on start up, if you wanted to try full on 64 feel free - it would be a bit risky doing online stuff tho.

i would like to know how fast you can render and what your average new production speeds are both in DC projects and graphic/movie/video programs that would REALLY test the new power.

From what I've read, 32 bits apps on 64 bit OS does no better that 32 bit apps on 32 bit OS.

Linux is your option but I don't know any.

newer programs are becoming 64 bit compatible - bridging the gap as the 64 bit AMD does running 64 and 32 simultainously.
then when 64 computing takes off it will be more apps will be 64 until eventually there is no 32 anymore (tho. that is way off).

Well I downloaded and tried the 64bit windows beta. Ototero sure was right.
My firewall wouldnt load and norton AV crashed bad when trying to load. Another thing i noticed is i couldnt get a network card driver to load. So i didnt have to wory about internet access. I couldnt get boinc or SOB to run either, but that may have been because i tried to load norton first and it stuffed the OS. Will play with it some more and see if I can get something to work.

when you boot up next time try 17 first before loaidng anti virus or IE. if you cant get on net you dont really need AV tho, seeing as stuff would only get in from disk.

see what happens when you dont try it , guess that must be one of the major flaws then not noticing if cards are in or not, see if it recognises CD's / floppys.
