    AMD Users Team roundup 29-Nov-04

    AMD Users Team roundup 29-Nov-04
    ==========================

Well it has been another busy week and a couple of weeks since the last roundup.

There have been some ups and downs ... mostly ups I'm pleased to say ;-).

Hello to all the new users that have joined recently. Your contribution has
    not gone unnoticed. Welcome aboard.

This roundup sees the arrival of a couple of new projects to AMD Users.

For our US members, at home and abroad, who may have missed the thread, we hope
    you had a great Thanksgiving.

There has been a bit of activity in the BOINC arena lately, so I thought I'd
    better start there....

    BOINC-Einstein

The BOINC-Einstein team will be pleased to note that Ototero now has them on
the stats board. And that's a nice way to start. Coming in on 26th Nov at
Rank#7, followed by an immediate 6th over the weekend.

    BOINC-LHC

After a good solid effor sustaining rank#17 in LHC, the results have gone
static again as the project has been experiencing some hardware difficulties:
    > [LHC RSS Newsfeed]
    > 29.11.2004 10:46 UTC
    > Testing servers for a while.
    > 17.11.2004 20:30 UTC
    > Hardware problems continue. The project is down until we can trust some server.
We hope they'll resolve their difficulties soon.

    BOINC-SETI

In the mean time the BOINC-Seti stats have soared with a rank jump of 43 places
in the last week from 657 to 614. That's a VERY nice trend folks. Well done.

    BOINC-Climate Prediction

If you are a BOINC runner and have experience with Climate Prediction, please
consider running a WU or two in CP as we have managed to slide slowly from
39th (Oct-01) into 48th today in the face of some heavy competition. I know
the CP team will appreciate any help you can offer.

    BOINC-Predictor

It seems that the Predictor techs are (thankfully) still determined to overcome
all odds to get their project back into the arena. They took receipt of their
new servers and have taken the site down to start the software migration to the
new machines. It has been a few days now and possibly already a little longer
than they were hoping, but they are a dedicated crew and I expect that they
will also have completed some further testing and optimisations by the time
the site comes back up. Remember they said the forums would be back up first,
but there will be more work required to get the splitters ready again to
distribute tasks, so try not to lean on them too hard as they are doing a
    good job.

    BOINC-Pirates

The Pirates project is not on the stats board yet. The pirates.vassar.edu site
appears to be somewhat slow to update the stats and although several members
have joined and crunched, so far, only 2 show in the Team Stats page. For those
of you looking for a quick update here is the link to the team in the "Total
    Points" ranking:
    http://pirates.vassar.edu/top_teams....edit&offset=80
At the time of writing the Pirates team is in rank#83, but this is likely to
change frequently as their project database catches up.

See what I mean about being a busy BOINC Week ?

Now lets have a look at, (to borrow the phrase from a forum post this week)
    "some old friends"...

    Seventeen or Bust

This week saw a new leader in 17 emerge. And with crunchpower like that it
was not a surprise. BoostedIntegra also managed to make the leap in style
by posting a 3.66 T cEMs dump to move from 2nd to 1st.
That also placed him in 3rd for Daily Ouput for the Prtoject for the day !
10 out of 10 for the style and thanks for the continued dedication to the
    Team Goal.

    Chessbrain

Those lucky enough to get logins for chessbrain have managed to sustain 4th
position since gaining the rank on November-11th (and I notice, creeping just
ahead). There was a bit of downtime on the chessbrain website but it did not
appear to affect the project itself. The new member signup problem continues.
The team members will let us know on the forum when the project team fix the
    problem.

    D2OL

Whilst maintaining rank#14, the D2OL Team have managed to post over 33,000
work units so far this month. But wait. There's more. The pace is accellerating.
If you have a rank in this project you may want to watch your six in the next
month. Im tipping this one to heat up in the next couple of weeks.

    Distributed.net (OGR-P2 and RC5-72)

There have been steady rank increases in these two projects. A little while
ago we decided to drive our lower order projects to better than rank#1000.
I am pleased to say that the progress in these 2 projects is very encouraging.
OGR-P2 is almost there but RC5-72 is going to be a challenge to push it over
the line before the start of 2005. But that race is not yet done...

    DPAD

Thanks to the members who continue to give DPAD some run-time. This month will
close with us in rank#19. If we have a couple of contributors with a spare CPU
(even one) it wouldn't take long to pull back rank#18. Perhaps a newbie with a
mind to make a difference could give a good run at rank#17 by the close of
the year. Something to think about?

    eOn

The stats board shows no results posted for eOn this week (after a push earlier
in the month) and no rank change, keeping us in rank#8 and holding fast. The
eOn team is demonstrating a their confidence in their position in the project
whilst lending a hand elsewhere ... and it IS appreciated. Thanks to the eOn team.

    Folding@Home

The Folding@Home crew continue their slog, and considering that the team rank in
this projects was 694 at October-01, they have done remarkably well with a
consistent rank increase almost every day since then.
Congratulations on achieving rank #551 today Team. Keep it up.

    Find A Drug

The Team in FAD have their hands full at the moment. A couple of steam trains
passed through and at the last check 2 more are on the way. The team has done
an excellent job to claw back another place this week. With a couple of fast
risers on the way, we are going to need to grab another 2 places quickly to
close out the year in rank#40. Well done to this project Team for the ongoing
    effort.

    UD-Grid

Well we didn't have to call it "UD" last roundup, but with WC-Grid now on the
board we'll be a bit more specific. The UD Grid team have managed to push a
new rank change almost every day...actually I think it HAS been EVERY day this
month. The rank improvement is around just over 300 places per month at the
moment, given the resources applied. If you are between projects or just want
to run something different, even just for a day, give this project a go and
we'll have it up with the others in no time. At rank#4385 it takes very little
effort to gain a good rank increase, so please spare a little time here when
you can, or you're bored, or looking to try something new.

    WC-Grid

Welcome to the new World Community Grid project members. Wow. hasn't this
project been hot since it started. Thanks to Kamaleigh for the heads-up on
the News article. On November-17 a couple of us popped in to kick the wheels
and look under the hood. Today the Team has 91 members and now holds rank#17
    http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/st...do?sort=points
Another excellent start into a new project.
Great to see so many people getting involved.

    Lifemapper

The contributors to the lifemapper project are making some solid progress in
rank#11. Rank#10 is edging ever closer...can you taste it yet ?

    Seti@Home (classic)

The Seti@Home crew welcomed a new member this week who brough a contibution
that converted into nice rank increase. Welcome BigDawg. You've got people to
catch and some that want to catch you. I hope this will get interesting too.

    TSC

The TSC team have managed to hold rank#19 whilst helping out in other areas.
Again thanks go to this team for their dilligence and generosity. I'm sure
that this will be repayed in kind in the future. Great stuff !

    Ubero

Known to some as "the old friend" a couple of days focus was required here
for a couple of team members dedicated to this cause, to keep their individual
ranks. Well done lads. Don't let it happen AGAIN !!!

    Zeta

It seems that we lost a spot in Zeta this month, losing out to a younger team
with less users and nodes that has processed fewer work units.
In short they got lucky and found a vein of Zero's.
Keep at them Team. Persistence will get us back up there !

    TKC and WhatPulse

TKC and WhatPulse both measure your keypresses, mouse clicks and wheel scrolls.
These two projects take nothing to run. Lets get it loaded and recording. It
does NOT track what you typed. Just a handfull of active members in these 2
projects are getting the stats up a long way. Jump in and lets drive them all
    the way home.

    Marmot

We have a small but dedicated crew in the Marmot (Turtle) project. Marmot,
whilst also counting scrolls, clicks and keys, also measures mouse travel
distance. A few have had problems with the client but those who have it working
are battling to keep us in the top 20. If you want to try something different
and don't mind the challenge of a website in French GIVE IT A GO !

Well that about does it for this roundup.

What was lost was small, but what was gained was huge.

Thanks to our admins, our moderators, our team founders, our Statsman and of
course to all our members, for another Excellent month !

Keep those CPU cycle's honest and recommend AMD Users to your friends.

Great writeup Dave. Well worth waiting for.

I've just started DHEP, we are already in position 5

I'll get around to adding Pirates to the stats (but I do the stats at work, always looking over my shoulder. It's all these new members you know, keeps me on my toes.

great summary but " recommend AMD to your friends" is just uncalled for. I'll recommend amdusers.com but never an AMD processor. Peace and Love. Boosted

Great job!! Thanks for the hard work.

As far as AMD site. I post on their regularly as well, and even mentioned this site, but they had just started a DF team. Doesn't hurt to post on other sites and have "Amdusers" in signature.

Another site I have tried as well or at least post at is.

    the roundup

    Thanks guys.

I'm glad the Roundup has been received well.

    I do enjoy doing it.

As I said to Stu, though, it took a bit longer this time round because there are more projects and quite a lot going on.

But thats just a drop in the ocean compared to what our admins and our statsman do for us on a day-to-day basis.

Besides, I get the chance to review each and every project...and keep wondering when I will have enough CPUs to have them all going at once !

    the amd.com post

    Oli,

Of course. here is the link to the post.
    http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showforum=27

I / we congratulated Team AMD (aka forums.amd.com in F@H) on their progress.
For those who are not aware they pulled together a lot of grunt and got into the top 100 in a fairly decent time.

I also used it as an opportunity to make others in the AMD community aware of the AMD Users forum.

I have been watching the views on the post and on our site and it appears to have converted well to some hits on our site.

perhaps some of those not involved in Team AMD will stop in past longer than a quick look-see.

I'm afraid that I found that someone had already used "AMDave" on their forum some time ago. So you will see that the post is signed "amd_ave". Please do not confuse "AMDave on the AMD.com site with me. Sorry for any confusion...if there has been any.
