You remember RISC architecture (Hackers movie quote = RISC is good), well it looks like it is finally here to stay and take over the x86 that has been bloated by absorbing the last of the redundant facade we keep pulling behind us. From now on we are talking serious accomplishment, no bull!

RISC based machines would be awesome but until Microsoft adopts it for its operating systems, I don't see it having much pull on the desktop world. Everything from smartphones, to tablets and to gaming consoles runs some variant of RISC processor inside, but unbelievably not PCs.

Linux and similar OSes would probably be the first ones to take advantage (and get the benefits) of the new RISC architecture... which would generate a chain reaction on the Distributed Computing community like the GPUs did... Who knows if a boost from AMD on the RISC architecture isn't just what the linux community needs to top off Windows for good?

An interesting read. As for Linux topping off Windows???? If the Linux developers can dumb down some linux configuration issues so that Joe/Marsha Average can change or upgrade their gpu video drivers without having to turn into techie weenies then maybe Linux will get somewhere. However as it sits it is still pretty much a niche operating system, but hope isn't lost as Apple has done some good things with it. If all this RISC stuff does cause a shift, it will sure alter our distributed computing world. But that world has been changing anyway for some time. It's probably really all going to depend on how software development keeps up. the business world is still going to be the primary driver for all this. The old computer geek days/world has really changed. lol
