    Freehal News

    And it's not good news:

In recent days, apparently carried out on my (Tobias) home computer via a Trojan horse hacker attacks. According to current information, the server FreeHAL the project were not affected, but these were also the end of March seized by the police and possibly be used as evidence.

The possibility of a compromise of the BOINC server can be excluded since no unauthorized access is to be the compiler or the secret key. The aim of the attacks apparently was blackmailing several people from my private life, a school and a university.

Unfortunately we have yet no precise information about the nature and scope of the investigation, therefore no conclusion can yet be made as to when a controlled operation is again possible. We try to explain this matter as quickly as possible.

For more information please send an e-mail to info@freehal.net. Responsible for the investigation, the police headquarters and the central Hesse Heidelberg Police Department or the respective prosecutors' offices.

We are delighted of course any donations, both financial as well as in the form of hardware, as it currently does not look like that we get the data and the hardware in the foreseeable future.

A downtime of DNETC-like proportions is awaiting us, I'm afraid....

Wow that is an amazing story. I feel sorry for Tobias. The poor guy has been trying so hard to keep his project up and running for this long. Now to have such a hacking occur and his computers seized by the police just tops off a bad year for him.

I've offered him two Compaq Proliant servers that were collecting dust on my attic, and he's interested.
Looks like he's not getting his old systems back for some months...

That's really cool Dirk! I hope he can use them.

May I ask what else you got collecting dust on your attic?

My collection of empty beercans, my Atari ST1024s, an Apple G3, a Goldstar Apple clone and a MacIntosh IIe.
Just brought the old AT bigtower cases to the recycle shop (without mobo).
I almost forgot my Compaq twin PII-400

He can use them, but there is the problem of transport.
He wants me to send them to him by post, but the Dual Xeon-III 550 alone weights some 45 kg.
The PIII-1000 is of 1U format and has the same lenght and width as the Xeon 550.
Any of our German and/or Belgian members who can assist in an Servers-for-FreeHAL-estafette?
If we can get FreeHAL and or Yoyo members to assist as well, Tobias could soon be back in bussines.

Why not host them remotely? Then there's no need to move them.

No, thanks! Wife would kill me...
