So ... how do we get to see these badges?

Eric (project admi) advises "The badges are displayed in several places, including forums and top participants stats pages. You should see a badge at the bottom of the user block in all your posts.
If you click on the badge icon it will bring you to the badge description page."

I confess: I'm a real sucker for badges (Must be a left-over from my days as a boy-scout).
So there'll be a bronze medal for Numberfields popping up in my signature pretty soon!
