looking for a new computer set up?

I am going to Hong Kong/China in a couple of months and hopefully can pick up a new PC with some power  cheaply over there. I want to get a ThunderK8WE(S2895) http://tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8we.html
but with the costs of processor, RAM, and motherboard. I think I can do better for less money with a single chip solution. I can't put two grand onto a computer

Any ideas or comments I'm glad to hear them.

In a couple of months dual core Intels and AMDs will be available.

dual core AMD yes (2Q), good luck if you see any dual core Intels this year.

but the price VS speed of ether chip will take some time.

yep, they are always released at crazy prices, but after a few months, possibly 1 year they should be reasonable.

maybe its worth going for a good/reasonable set up now e.g AMD 64 3200+ as they are around £100. and saving the rest of that money for another machine/upgrade in a few months time.

Tom's Hardware was saying that a good cheap machine is a Sempron 3100 setup. It used the 754 MB so you can just plug in a 64-bit chip when you want to and it runs just about as fast as they do anyway. The benchmarks were promising and the price was even better.

    AMD's A64-3500 is the best bang-for-buck today.

Yes Vaughan I do agree that the AMD 64 series is the best bang-for-the buck and probably has enough power to do what I do, But man I really wanted dual CPU. I'm using a AMD 2400+ and it works, but using two operating systems at the same time slows me down dramatically and almost forget about trying to run speech to text or anything major like .NET.

the odds are right now how probably go with an AMD 64 3400 with 1GB+ of RAM and a decent but cheap graphics card.

Theres always dual socket A's, but you'd be regressing. I suppose it depends on what you do with it though. You can use Mobiles to avoid the cost of the expensive MP's.

I was in St Louis not long ago, you know of Hydromat?
