Generally you are better off with 32GB of 1600Mhz RAM than with 8GB of 2400Mhz RAM -in case your mobo will only take two banks of the fast RAM and then only in 4GB modules.
When you are overclocking the system, RAM can be overclocked as well. 16 or 32 GB of the RAM Terry mentioned can be very useful then.
Personally I am very fond of G.Skill's 1866Mhz Ripjaws CL8-9-9-24 memory for overclocking.
Thats a good reminder dirk thanks i do remember my first am2 board only supporting premium speed ram in one of the 2 banks meaning 2 of the four slots and had forgotten about that thanks looks like ill be downloading some data sheets im glad you said something last time it was an unpleasant surprise

I'm into air cooling, my A8-3870K as my hottest CPU/APU is cooled by a Thermaltake Big Typhoon

I've recently replaced a howling Intel stock cooler with this one, a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO

A next 100 Watt TDP CPU/APU will fall under this giant -these three coolers all use 120mm fans- , the Coolermaster Hyper Z600, already waiting on the shelf:

woh woh woh . simmer down post whores is the speed of the ram not dictated by the speed of the chip
    In short: No.
While the memory controller in present Intel and AMD FX systems will almost nullify the effect of using faster RAM than 1333MHz (Haswell perhaps at 1600MHz), I can stick anything from DDR3-800 MHz to DDR3-1866 MHz in my Llano systems and let it run at that speed without changing anything further in the settings. Overclocking I can reach to at least 2133 Mhz, but 2400 MHz is also be reachable -provided I will not use the dSub(VGA) cable of my monitor, as that limits the maximum speed of the RAM for APU systems. On the new FM2 and FM2+ mobo's the limit may even be 2666MHz or higher. Faster RAM has a huge impact in APU systems as it has an immediate effect on the IGP. You can use CPU-Z to look into the settings of your RAM, or use your BIOS for that. The latter approach would also let you change the settings, even to the point of de-stableizing your system by setting the speed and/or timings too high.

But frequency alone does not make your memory fast, there's also the latency of the RAM.
    CAS latency of 9 at 1000 MHz (DDR3-2000) is 9 ns, while CAS latency of 7 at 667 MHz (DDR3-1333) is 10.5 ns. (CAS / Frequency (MHz)) × 1000 = X ns
    Example: (7 / 667) × 1000 = 10.4948 ns
    For the fast CAS 8 1866 MHz modules: 8 / 933 = 8.5744 ns
    And for CAS 9 2133 MHz modules: 9 / 1066 = 8.4427 ns
    Faster? CAS 10 2400 MHz modules: 10 / 1200 = 8.3333 ns
    Not enough? CAS 11 2666 MHz modules: 11 / 1333 = 8.2520 ns
    Living on the edge? CAS 12 3000 MHz modules: 12 / 1500 = 8.0000 ns

And the last look deceptively slow -just your average low profile vengeance- at this (But note the "Extreme"):

Here is one I bought for a GPU but haven't installed yet. And the Corsair H80i is basically the same setup. The H80i goes right on an AMD MB but with an Intel you have to pull the board and install a bracket.
