Thread: Home-Brew WiFi Booster for about 3 bucks

  1. #11
    ha ha ha thats interesting,
I have held classes to show people who have access in their trailer park to park provided wifi that they were simply too far to get on from there camp site .
coffee cans with with usb dongles work well however effectiveness does depend on the chip on the adapter.
It is important to note if your on someone elses wifi be polite. if its an older person who uses very little bandwidth maybe even offer to chip in on their bill.
if your going to use a lot of bandwidth for something do it in the wii hrs of the night when they most likely wont be on it.
its in your best interest. if you start to hog there net they may investigate and you will lose your free hookup.
I am curios about the specifics of the verdict where you are referring to dirk.
Im familiar with Aircrack but its not that easy to use if you don't know what your doing and the hardware support is very very limited.
there are only two reasons to crack someone's password one being you have no open APs and these days most isps are sending out routers with security preset that wasn't always the case a few years ago.
The other is your doing something that you don't want to get caught doing and i cant support that depending on what it is.
Maybe your a hacktivist in witch case I can see the need for anonymity and you will most likely run several proxies no harm no foul for a good cause.
on the other hand im reminded of what happened to a very good friend of mine.
Hes a trucker rarely home someone hacked his SSID to upload a bunch of child porn.
Since hes gone about a month at a time he orders a lot of stuff from ebay he had recently gotten delivery of 20 used hard drives wile he was away.
Still gone from the house not making it back home yet his house was raided and all of his computers were taken including his shipment of drive which he had not even gotten a chance to get home and play with.
my heart felt concern for him was who knows whats on those drives and even if they were formated but not destructively the FBI would not have a hard time recovering.
luckily all was well and his equipment was returned to him promptly.

I think the law's still out in the UK as to whether it's legal or not - I think currently it's on the wrong side of the law. ISP's have taken matters into their own hands and now all new connections that have a router come with WEP/WPA enabled. I know WEP is crackable but once you do that, it IS illegal here. So you're hard pressed to find open wifi anymore here.

However, for the effort it's taken you to jump on an open AP, I'd just buy my own connection. 3 of us in the flat, pay £35 (~$56) a month (so ~$20 each) for a 36Mb/s connection (with 8Mb/s up). Far more stable than wifi stealing. 2MB/s Steam downloads is great. (Unlimited bandwidth as well).

if i were to crack it then it would be stealing kinda .... the definition of theft is to deprive someone else of something....
Just being a smart ass there. I too would be pissed if someone cracked my wifi and ate my pipe......
Unlimited sounds great even if you pay for the best of the best here there is still a usage cap.
there have been many lawsuits against isps here for bandwidth throttling people they have detected using the Tor network.
Problem is there are many legitimate uses for bit-torrent Blizzard is one of them just for example.
some content is even bit torrent exclusive like bands giving away there first album.
Ytcracker founder of nerdlife records encourages people to download his albums he serves them himself on irc.
System of a down tired of there record label titled one of there albums Steel This Album. Korns video yall want a single
also implied the same thing. the pixies recently released a bi-torrent exclusive album....I could go on on on
something else to note is that when my dsn server went down last week for the area the tor network still worked
throttling bandwidth was declared a violation of contract the judgement stated if you pay for 25mbs than that's what has to be provided.
there answer to that whats the data cap. the only ones exempt from the cap as well as motoring were businesses class accounts.
at 100usd not a bad deal you get 25mbs unlimited non big brother bandwidth.
we are considering a retail line for the kids to do there homework on since i do lose the WiFi from time to time.
it always pops back up by itself maybe someone turns on a microwave who knows.
the argument that the .tor network is unfair and eats all the bandwidth is bollix.even the best connection on the tor network is only going to hit 2mb
on a very very very very very good day and even then a 100 meg fine will be done in seconds a 2GB file in just minutes.
Im not sure but there may be an inability to the client to write to the drives any faster.
Point is the bandwidth argument is easily dis proven... now to my point
NOT ME>>>>>> NOT WHAT IM SAYING BIG BROTHER
But since a person is not responsible for there ip they cant be held accountable for what happens on it.
however if that same person downloads a show that has been flagged by the creator which is how it works now
meaning that its all good unless the person whom holds the copyright requests it be taken down.
they have violated the contract they have with there ISP and can be held accountable
torrent sites have put in place a automated system for them to take down calmed copyrighted Media if they care
Ive attached an example of a dbz search on a torrents site youll see at the bottom 64 results removed .
this site is in the us and thats what they have done to be able to remain open
but thats not the end of the story
Legal content on the sites is also being removed because these companies have begun to target the competition indie films and shows.
Now that good cgi is not a billion dollars anymore were starting to see some really really good production on a low budget
some movie companies even seed fake copy's slightly before the cams come out its all fair as far as im concerned.
what happens is lots of people jump on a fake torrent uploaded by the movie company and then everyone that searches see lots of people on the fake so they hope on too
I think its funny that some people get pissed
( boo hoo the movie i wanted to download is fake lulz )
so back to my point any bit-torrent traffic is risky legitimate or not and can get you flagged for a closer look into you traffic.
so retail connection or not i will be keeping my box.. safer for me and inconsequential for them
the way i use my connection in a curtios manner is probably not the norm i will admit.
by that if you missed the post i don't hog the pipe and the majority of the bandwidth i do use is from 3 am to 6 am
Oh i meant to ask where you guys hail from whats the tor laws like
