How to run Linux on a USB drive

Just tried this and it works perfectly...

Follow the great instructions from this site (respect to lt.hack.com for this!)... http://www.althack.com/index.php?opt...d=24&Itemid=27

You can then either run it within Windows by using the included QEMU Virtual app by just clicking on the "dsl-windows.bat" file or boot your 'usb bootable' PC with it in the USB slot.

Run the included FireFox, download BOINC and attach to your projects!

There you go, a failsafe way to confuse the hell out of salespeople in PC stores whilst you're Borging all their equipment!

DSL is a great linux distro. Ran it briefly on my laptop until I was forced to return to Windows 2K on it :evil:

Can you install QEMU on the same USB disc?

Running Linux through QEMU in windows is very slow... I've tried it. :roll:

But booting a machine to Linux from a USB drive is a great idea!

Yep, by following the instructions; QEMU will be installed onto your USB drive. So as soon as you insert the drive into a running windows PC you can just click on the batch file and it starts perfectly!

I forgot to say that! ...QEMU is slow so your benchmarks won't be impressive (to say the least). It really is just for playing around with.

Booting directly onto the USB runs perfectly though, better obviously if you boot from a USB2.0!
