It needn't be all that expensive (just the RAM....) My Asrock AB350M Pro4 and Ryzen 7 1700 were less than 200 Euro's together.
Fortunately RAM prices are dropping. The amount of money I spent for RAM in my A12-9800E system now gets twice the RAM (32GB now vs 16GB then)

With the higher and higher electricity rates a new system can justify itself pretty quick in energy savings over x number of years

So my new graphics card has gone pop and has to go back. I shall hopefully still be able to participate in the final half of the marathon.

By the way, I can access these posts without logging in!!

If you are still on good speaking terms with that former employer, they might be able to let go of more recent Dell hardware for you.
(Knowing Dell, the cases you bought originally have proprietary connectors, useless with generic hardware)
Your old i7 2600 is 4-core/8-thread at 95 Watt TDP, while next generation i7 3770 did 77 Watt -and fits in the same Socket 1155 mobo.

Socket 1150. These feature AVX2 amongst others.
    i7 4770 4-core/8-thread at 84 Watt TDP, next generation i7 5775 did 65 Watt.

Socket 1151. These feature AVX2 and FMA3 amongst others.
    i7 6700 4-core/8-thread at 65 Watt, as does next generation i7-7700.
    i7 8700 -that still uses a 1151 board- has 6 cores/12 threads at 65 Watt TDP.

--And Ryzen 7 1700 has 8-cores/16-threads at 65 Watt TDP--

Einstein -where you'd need your GPU- runs from the 11th of May till the 16th

So how are we going now? Seems pretty steady progress?

Progress looks otherwise, we're taking a beating at Javelin Throwing (NFS) and have lost ground at the Marathon (WCG-ZIKA)

I've been allocating resources accordingly, javelin we are indeed taking a pounding, I am doing my best to hold current position in yoyo, which it seems we will. In a few hours if it looks like we can coast to the end I will make a full burn on WCG. I studied the numbers last night, if the teams above us don't kick it up a notice or two we can potentially gain another three spots in the marathon with a hard burn. I am concerned about Einstein myself, my aging cards are still king of the double precision, but with modern technology I cannot hold a candle to single precision projects, hopefully we have a fleet of Vegas awaiting orders. If we do manage to hold 11th in the overall, I believe that will be out best ranking ever.
