Hey Guys, I just had a question...
What is better? a Manchester core, or a Toledo core?
I was looking at the 3800+, and you can get it either way, and the price is approx. the same too... I am confused.

p.s. I could google it, but that ruins the fun of a forum :icon_wink:

Manchester has a smaller die and lower transistor count = 89w instead of 110w :)

You can't go wrong with a core named after the best football club in the world.. They should have named it the Manchester United Core. :)

Isn't the Toledo an A64 FX chip?

I think it is used in 939 X2's and FX's

Thanks guys, I think I might pick up the 89W one lol, save a little power.

I believe my opteron 165s and FX60s come up as toledo in cpuz. I think the Toledo has 1mb of cache where the other has 512k on the L2? I also remember the 4800 Toledo was to expensive when I bought it. I guess I helped AMD out a bit when I bought that one.

Sunday I popped out my 3800+ from my HP Media Center 939 socket and popped in a "not reccomended" (on my MSI Amethyst-M motherboard) 185 Opteron. Runs just fine and I have been able to tweak up my Majestic-12 output. Still testing to see how far I can push MJ-12 on it - but I do seem to have hit the wall of my broadband speed - rather than the processor speed. Can't seem to get over about 1,550 Kbits download speed on average.

The only reason I'm wasting this Opty this way is because the darn mobo I sent back to New Egg for replacement or repair is still doa. Having the Opty just sit there in the box seemed more of a waste. I have long suspected that the Opty, being a server-oriented processor, could handle communications better than the 3800+.

I hear that they take their football pretty seriously over in the U.K.

Yes very. Fotball is our counterpart to the Baseball in USA.:)

Here is a pdf document which explains the core names and it is from AMD.

Guys, Can a OPTY 939 pin be used in a regular ddr memory 939 board?? I have a A8N sli premium mb and am looking for something a bit faster than the X2 4200 I'm using. The X2 4800 1 meg. chips are all but impossible to find at a reasonable price. Anybody know??? :)

Hey Blackadder,

Its should work fine, I would just check that your motherboard bios supports this cpu. Usually this is the only gotcha.

I must admit that pdf file is right on in there direction back in November 2003. BUt today is some 4 years later and most of us recognize the dilemma AMD is in right now! Nice Link Tek 182.

Thanx...I Figured if it was a 939 pin it might work, however the Asus MB specs for processors doesn't say it will work with Opty's...I'll keep on looking. :)

Opty's are not listed for use in my 939 pin MB, but it seems to be working better than the 3800+ I replaced with it. It crunches at about the same speed as the 3800+, so no real benefit there, but it's communications abilities far exceed what the 3800+ seemed to be able to put out. On MJ-12 I can crawl at over twice the speed as I could before.
